About Summit’s CEFEX Certification
In 2012, Summit received the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) CEFEX certification for our third party administration services. Summit anticipates certification on an annual basis as a commitment to continued quality services to our clients.
The Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) is an independent global assessment and certification organization. CEFEX provides an independent recognition of a firm’s conformity to a defined Standard of Practice. It implies that a firm can demonstrate adherence to the industry's best practices, and is positioned to earn the public's trust. This registration serves clients who require assurance that their vendors are being managed according to commonly accepted best practices.
The Standard of Practice was developed by a cross-industry Task Force chaired by the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA). Although record keepers and administrators are not fiduciaries themselves, they provide services to fiduciaries and their plan participants. These Service Providers help fiduciaries meet their fiduciary obligations. The Practices form the basis for the certification program and are organized in a similar way to the Fiduciary Practices described by Fiduciary360 and CEFEX for investment managers, investment advisors and investment stewards.
Summit is among the first in the United States to succeed in becoming certified by CEFEX as adhering to ASPPA’s Standard of Practice for Retirement Plan Service Providers. This certification includes best practices for “governance, organization, human resources, operations, planning, systems, and disclosure, as defined by a cross-industry task force established in 2007.” In a press release, the General Manager of CEFEX, Carlos Panksep, announced, “The CEFEX certification provides assurance to fiduciaries and their stakeholders that Summit has demonstrated adherence to the best practices in the retirement industry. The successful completion of the independent assessment is an extraordinary indication of a firm’s accountability to its clients.”
